Improv Asylum

Course Information

Classes are offered every ten weeks. Classes run for eight weeks and meet once a week for two and a half hours. Call (617) 263-6887 ×13 for a brochure or to register. Click here to register on-line.

All training center students in levels 1-6 receive an ID good for free and reduced shows.

If classes are cancelled due to snow, we will notify Channel 7 News (television). Check there for our posting.



    LEVEL 1    

An introduction to improvisational techniques and skills. An emphasis is placed on working in a group, using your imagination and basic scene structure concepts.

This is an introduction to the Improv Asylum technique of improvisation.


    LEVEL 2    

An extension of the Level 1 class, this session explores and heightens the concepts and ideas introduced in the prior class. More advanced concepts are introduced, with emphasis on developing a point of view on stage.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Improv Asylum’s Level 1 course.



    LEVEL 3    

During this session, you will explore different methods to create and define a character. Techniques will be taught to allow you to work and develop a series of characters to use in scene work. You will also learn how to create effective character instantaneously during a scene.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Improv Asylum’s Level 2 course.



    LEVEL 4    

This session focuses on the improvisation scene. Students will become familiar with the basic components of the scene and the ways to manipulate them. Overall scenic concepts will be addressed as well.


Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Improv Asylum’s Level 3 course.



    LEVEL 5    

This session focuses on the improvisation scene. Students will become familiar with the basic components of the scene and the ways to manipulate them. Overall scenic concepts will be addressed as well.


Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Improv Asylum’s Level 4 course.



    LEVEL 6    

Level 6 concentrates on creating a performance. Students work with the instructor to put together a sketch/improvisation show.

Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Improv Asylum’s Level 5 course.

Orientation ~ Sunday, June 16th for all Level 1a students at 6:30pm in the theater.

Who is Orientation for? Orientation is for students in Level 1 of our Training Center.

Why come to Orientation? Orientation is an opportunity for students to meet the owners and other members of the corporate staff along with the other instructors/interns who teach on your class night. It is a chance for you to find out what is going on at Improv Asylum including new offers for Training Center students, new performances in our A.S.S. (After Show Series) and more as well as a time for you to ask any questions you might have about Improv Asylum or the Training Center itself.

Meet & Greet ~ Thursday, June 19th from 7 – 8pm in the front room

Why come to the Meet & Greet? The Meet & Greet is a great way for you to meet ALL of the instructors/interns in our Training Center as well as a way for you to mingle with other students from all levels. Join us for a free, Italian buffet, a complimentary drink and a free ticket to the 8pm main stage show.
