Improv Asylum is now offering a comprehensive course study in directing improvisational and sketch comedy. Directing an improvisationally-based ensemble requires expertise in the art of theatrical improvisation, as well as exceptional critical skills of organizing and applying other aspects of a show, such as developing written material, use of music, tech, casting and coaching. The Director’s Program will work to develop all the skills necessary for a person to effectively lead actors in the creation of successful performances. A small group of select participants (an average of four per class) will participate in the program. The course instruction will include a comprehensive study in improvisation, both from a performer’s standpoint as well as from a directing/coaching approach.
This year-long intensive course will focus on developing the skills required to competently direct an ensemble in an improvisationally-based show. The Director’s Program will focus on class study, practical work with Improv Asylum directors currently working on productions and classroom discussion with peers, Improv Asylum directors, actors, musicians, technicians and producers. The exposure to the various members of Improv Asylum’s production team will give the candidate a full appreciation for how an Improv Asylum show is produced. The program culminates with the candidates casting and creating their own show to be previewed at Improv Asylum.
The program is divided into five ten-week sessions which cover a one-year period. New candidates will be admitted to the program twice a year. Candidates need to have a flexible schedule as some of the classes and assignments will take place during the day and others in the evening and on weekends. The time commitment is about 15 to 18 hours per week and specific hours will vary depending on assignments.
This program is for adults ages 19 and older and is by application only. All applicants should have some combination of previous training and practical experience in directing.
Tuition for each ten-week session (sessions 1-4) of the Directing Program is an introductory rate of $500. Tuition for session 5 (sixteen-week session) of the Directing Program is $750.
The next Directing Program starts on August 20, 2006.
