The Improv Asylum Training Center has a whole new set of classes for individuals who are interested in creating written material. The sketch writing program will be kicking off again this winter season, so register now, because class space is limited. This class is taught by Marty Johnson
In this introductory survey, students will gain a working knowledge of the components that make up great sketch writing and learn ways to kick-start their own writing. Using sketches from television, web, and live performance as examples, students will learn about scene structure, writing dialogue and popular sketch formats. In-class work will also consist of writing exercises, and reading/discussing student assignments. Outside of class, students will be expected to complete writing assignments and to attend at least one IA Mainstage performance.
No experience necessary.
In this level, students will focus on generating, and revising, material. Building on the lessons from Intro to Sketch, students will be pushed to brainstorm and write multiple full-length sketches. In class, there will be an emphasis on reading, analyzing and learning from student work. They will be expected to revise sketches as well as write new pieces simultaneously. Students will explore the use of improvisation in the sketch writing process and learn other revision tools.
Level 1 Sketch Writing prerequisite.
Using the Improv Asylum’s Mainstage and NXT shows as a guide, students will be directed through the process of writing sketches that align with the format and style of an IA revue. The primary emphasis of this class is on generating and revising new work within preferred IA structures. Class will culminate with a informal showcase of student sketches, giving students the opportunity to see their writing come to life in front of an audience. Some time in the final weeks of class will be spent on the process of honing and rehearsing selected student sketches for the performance.
